Welcome to the Getting Organized section. All the information and workshops in this section was researched and developed by Emma Williams and Jessica Robar.

The following lesson plan and all the materials can be downloaded for printing and sharing. Please credit HeartWood Centre for Community Youth Development and the Lunenburg District Office of Community Services, Nova Scotia when using the materials. Future Start Lesson Plan: Getting Organized

Session Topic: Daily Tasks

Objectives:

  • To learn new tips to keep your tasks organized

Approximate Time:

  • 30 minutes

Materials, Props and Technology:

  • Projector, laptop and screen
  • Assortment of clean clothes for Clothing Line Up Activity

Room set up:

  • Chairs in a horseshoe

Workshop Details and Script:

Slide 1-2: Intro: Hi I am_____ (And they are...) Today we are here to talk about how to get better
organized. We have 3 topics: Daily Tasks, Time Management and Motivation. As well as a few different
activities.

Slide 3: (Clothing Line-up Activity) For this activity you have 1 minute to plan as a group how to best
organize the clothing. You will then be timed to see how quickly you can organize the clothes. (Give group 1 minute to plan and then time them)

Have a group discussion about what they did to help complete the task. (Ask: What worked in your organizing? What didn’t work?) Ask: How can this help you organize other tasks in your day-to-day lives.

Slide 4: Have a group discussion on daily task tips. Write down on flipchart what tips the group uses to help them with completing their daily tasks.

Slide 5: Talk about the different apps that are out there for apple phones and android phones. Show them the apps that are in power point them ask them if they have any other apps that they use on their phones/tablets/computers. (Write down on flipchart what they say)

Slide 6: If they don’t know how to find apps on the phone/tablet show them the links on next slide, then

click on one of the links so that they can see how easy it is to find apps. (Power point was done with apple ipad, so it doesn’t have the links for androids)

Session Topic: Time Management

Objectives:

  • To develop new skills on managing your time while staying organized.

Approximate time:

  • 25 minutes

Materials, Props and Technology:

  • Projector, laptop and screen

Room set up:

  • Chairs in a horseshoe

Workshop Details and Script:

Slide 8: Time Management intro slide. Have a group discussion on how it takes 21 days to create a new habit. Use the flip chart paper to write down what some of their habits are. Talk about what they do to manage their time (write question on paper; What do you do to manage your time?) (They can write the answers on post-its if they would like) Then have a group discussion about the answers.

Slide 9-11: These three slides are showing 12 tips on time management. As a group talk about the tips and see what the group has to say about them. The number one tip/rule is; It’s okay to say no if you’re already feeling over whelmed with what your doing, no one will be upset with you when you have to say no. Explain the S.M.A.R.T rule (S: Be Specific, M: Measure it, A: Is it Achievable, R: Be realistic, T: Is there a Time limit) (Write down what tips they have on the flip chart paper)

Session Topic: Motivation

Objectives:

  • To learn about how to get your self better motivated

Approximate time:

  • 20 minutes

Materials, Props and Technology:

  • Projections, laptop and screen

Room set up:

  • Chairs in a horseshoe

Workshop Details and Script:

Slide 12: In this part of the power point we will be talking about Motivation.

Slide 13: Have the success circle shown on the flip chart paper so that people can see it better. Then start to explain the “Success Circle”. Talk about the clothing game and what steps they think they used from the success circle.

Slide 14: Tips on how to stay motivated, go over the tips with the group. Then have them work in groups of two and talk about what helps them to stay motivated. Give them 5 minutes to talk them come back to the group. Write out the question flip chart paper and when everyone is back in the group have them talk about the tips they use write the answers down on the paper.

Slide 15: This slide is about rewarding yourself after your tasks. There are many ways to reward yourself after a job well done.
